This collection of over 200 old photographs of Chadderton illustrates life and change in this old district caught between the larger communities of Manchester and Oldham. The town developed independently of its bigger neighbours, from an ancient manor with grand homes to a major industrial complex during the heyday of the cotton industry. This industrial period was the time of Chadderton's greatest growth and many of the photographs here illustrate the mills and some of the people that worked in them. The wealth created by the industry, at least for its owners, is represented in the public buildings that were created during this time of which Chadderton had its share. There are also pictures here of Chaddertonians at school, doing their shopping, at leisure and at church. The book will appeal to old and new residents of the town and, perhaps especially, to those who now live elsewhere, The authors have been responsible for two previous popular books on the history of the town and are active members of the Chadderton Historical Society.
