Raising a Reader

Learning to read with a Sainsbury’s Reader

From an early age, kids love looking at books and having stories read to them – it fires their imagination and helps them to learn about the world around them. The more you read with kids, the more it paves the way for good vocabulary development, reading readiness and eventual academic achievement.
Getting started

Sainsbury’s Reading Scheme is an exciting range of 12 books graded into different colour-coded levels. They combine beautiful images with engaging, easy-to-read stories to capture your child’s imagination while developing their reading skills, general knowledge and hopefully a love of reading.

As your child discovers and enjoys the exciting world of the Sainsbury’s Reading Scheme, you can select the books that meet the exact needs for your child’s level. All the books include a Certificate of Reading and sticker sheet to encourage and reward your child.
In professional hands

These inspiring books are written by leading children’s authors and compiled in consultation with leading literacy experts, including Cliff Moon M.Ed., Honorary Fellow of the University of Reading, who has recently colour-coded reading levels for all UK schools.
Tailor-made for your child

The Sainsbury’s Reading Scheme progresses from easy-to-read stories with word repetition and picture word boxes for those just beginning to read, through to stories with a rich vocabulary and more challenging sentence structure.

All the books are colour-coded with the ‘Book Bands’ system used by UK schools, enabling parents to easily recognise which ones are suitable for their children. They tie in with National Curriculum levels: Key Stage 1 is Levels 1-3 and Key Stage 2 is Levels 3-4. No matter which level you select, you can be sure that you’re helping your child learn to read, then read to learn.
